SURFACE METAMORPHOSIS

/FALL 2019/

ICP

The international center of photography’s system is based on the merge between the school and the museum. The museum and school coexist but still have their own separate flow.  The concept of expansion and contraction starts  to break the boundary and in-between space and generates a metamorphosis in the space division.

BREAKING THE IN-BETWEEN

The school and museum begin to correlate with one another into the next expansion space. The metamorphosis is activated as the space switches its purpose and program - it shifts back and forth between the use of the students and school faculty, to the use of museum visitors overtime.

// 2D-3D Deformation Sketches //

Photography reflects the reality through different lenses, through different photographers’ eyes. As a result, the reality is warped and deformed. An existing planar interior starts to form its program when its surface and body starts to develop into its new form. The interior structure planes undergo a metamorphosis, with the change of “behavior” - program. When a program occur, the surface inflates from the plane into the third dimension. The 2d planes transform into 3d volumes through the process of inflation, which create inhabiting spaces. The in-between space creates a void that forms a way of circulation around and through the volumes. The concept of surface metamorphosis in space is further explored through the concept of expansion/contraction. The deformation from the existing wall surfaces transforms vertically and horizontally, to create  an immersive space into the connecting two buildings.

PROGRAM: MUSEUM/SCHOOL [EXPANSION/CONTRACTION]

The exploration of surface metamorphosis in relation to program is reflected through the concept of expansion / contraction. The contraction created from the surface inflation forms a threshold and transition from one program to another that leads into a new expansion space for exhibition. To focus on the museum program, the exhibition space expands into the school side horizontally and vertically, spatially and visually with the shift of materials.People go in and out of the space, the crowd condenses and  disperses. The body movement starts to form the space while transiting from one space to another. Similarly, the users of each space begins to deform according to time.

Materiality acts as a tool to visually expand and contract space and breaking the boundary between 2d and 3d. Mirror expands one’s vision beyond the plane by reflecting what is across. Therefore, the imagery of the space is duplicated, giving an illusion of a broader space. When the mirrored surface is deformed into a curved surface, the Image gets deformed as well. Glass and thermo glass, though is formed to create contraction at transition spaces, suggest a new space beyond. It visually shows the expansion from the existing and performs as both a boundary that expands and contracts.

Exhibiting is about showcasing an identity, a personality, a voice. Museums and exhibition enhance one’s art in other’s eyes. It puts the viewers into the surrounding of the art, ‘reflecting’ themselves next to the artist’s point of view. The mirror hence shows the viewers as part of the exhibition, which makes them think of how they can see themselves in a larger society. Viewers could see themselves in any exhibition, in any image, and in any context. The full length mirror expands the scope which frames what is reflected. It wraps around the space in the way that it involves all into the artist’s environment, all viewers are reflected and are exhibited within the exhibition, while expanding the physical space itself into an infinity world. Photography is a way to expand one’s point of view on the world through the lenses of a camera.
