SHARED EYES
/FALL 2018/
The dwelling creates the living space between the family members, a home that creates a picture and performed movement within a frame. As a house designed to reside a sociable, sharing, and loving family, the idea of “access to all” is created through different visual connection while keeping physical separation. The stair design focuses on bridging the different levels as well as the structure as a whole together, both horizontally and vertically - connecting not only the interior space program, but also the movement of the user.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Families’ connection, bond, and relationship are most prominent in the domestic home. The love and care develop in every household throughout the years and generations - from kids to parents to grandparents. The domestic home becomes the center for a private “public” communication between a small group of people - a family. Therefore, the idea of openness is amplified to represent the concept of “sharing” not only of a common space, but also visually and verbally.

PROGRAM
An “access to all” living and gathering space is created through openness and visual connection between the levels and programs while still being physically separated., to form the needed public and personal privacy of each family member.
The stairs are the main connection factor of the project: visual connection is established from the basement to the roof, and is the main circulation between the levels. The angled glass partition at the double height on the second floor open one’s vision from the 1st floor up to the second floor and vice-versa. However, the bedrooms on the second floor, while being more private, is shifted to the back, away from the vision through the glass from the first floor.

// Material Collage //
The rustic material palette, which includes warm dark wood, concrete floor, carpet, and wood furniture reflects the features of the old carriage house. The new structures imitates the existing structure materials, from the exposed brick wall to the wooden beams and roofing.
The metal rods connected to the roof down to form the stairs’ guardrail ‘pulls’ the wood slats from the roof down to make the steps of the main staircase. It seems like the wooden steps are mirrored from the roof.
