BALANCED TEMPO
/SPRING 2018/
The 10 shapes were formed with the rule of increasing and decreasing on the x, y and z axis. The first 5 shapes were formed with the following rule: As x and y increase equally, z decreases. The next 5 shapes were formed with the following rule: As x decreases, z increases, and y stay stable. With the rules applied, the family of forms create a rhythmic flow through the 10 shapes.
Preliminary Assemblies
With the family of forms, assemblies were formed, creating void and space around them. The different blocks create a spatial interaction in the third dimension.
The Proposal - The Tempo
Not only does the family of forms create a rhythm through scale, but also the splitting of the shape into repetitive components emphasizes the “tempo” and harmony. The repetitive components of the assembly also are cantilevered onto the other shapes, going both vertically and horizontally. In other words, all the shapes are holding each other up, creating this idea of balance rhythm or “balanced tempo”.
The shapes stacked and placed onto each other establish negative space under and around the spaces: this allows not only people to occupate the interior space but also to move around, through the masses and to sit on the platforms. With an intense and dynamic flow, along with large openings to the outside, the nature can also be part of the design. The ocean view relates to the construct with the idea of dynamic waves and winds surrounding the space.
The Experience - The Melody
The Tempo is created between the ceiling and the ground. The length of the repetitive masses are dependent on one another between the two horizontal slabs. Therefore, as they "push and pull" onto each other, a melody is created throughout the space. The experience is formed when people go through and around the masses, participating in the piece and the rhythm.
